Jellyfin isn't just a website; it has dedicated apps for almost every device imaginable. This guide will show you how to find and install the official Jellyfin apps on all your screens.

Overview

To get the best streaming experience—especially for 4K and surround sound—you should always use the dedicated Jellyfin app for your device rather than a web browser. The apps are 100% free with no in-app purchases or subscriptions.

Smart TVs & Streaming Sticks

Installing Jellyfin on your living room TV is the best way to enjoy your LocalNode.

  • Roku: Open the Roku Channel Store on your TV, search for "Jellyfin", and click "Add Channel".
  • Amazon Fire TV / Fire Stick: Search for "Jellyfin" using the Alexa voice remote or the Find menu, and select "Download".
  • Apple TV: Open the App Store on your Apple TV and search for "Swiftfin" (the official Jellyfin client optimized for Apple TV).
  • Android TV / Google TV / Chromecast: Open the Google Play Store on your TV and search for "Jellyfin for Android TV".
  • LG WebOS (2021+): Open the LG Content Store and search for "Jellyfin".

💡 Tip: If you have an older LG or Samsung TV that does not have the Jellyfin app in its store, the cheapest and best solution is to plug a $30 Roku or Fire Stick into the back of your TV.

Smartphones & Tablets

Watch your media in bed or on the go.

  • iPhone & iPad: Open the iOS App Store and search for "Jellyfin Mobile". (Swiftfin is also available and sometimes offers better video playback on newer iOS devices).
  • Android Phones & Tablets: Open the Google Play Store and search for "Jellyfin".

Laptops & Computers

While you can watch Jellyfin in Google Chrome or Safari, the dedicated desktop app provides much better support for advanced audio codecs and subtitle formats.

  • Windows, Mac, & Linux: Go to jellyfin.org/downloads and download the "Jellyfin Media Player" installer for your operating system.

Gaming Consoles

  • Xbox One & Series X/S: The Jellyfin app is available directly in the Microsoft Store on your Xbox.
  • PlayStation 4/5: Sony does not allow third-party media apps easily. However, you can use the PS4/PS5 built-in web browser and navigate to http://localnode.local:8096 to watch.

Connecting the apps to your LocalNode

No matter which app you install, the very first time you open it, you will be asked for a Server Address.

  1. Make sure the device (e.g. your phone or Roku) is connected to your home Wi-Fi.
  2. In the Server Address field, type: http://localnode.local:8096
  3. Click Connect.
  4. You will then be prompted for your username and password. Enter the ones you created during setup.

⚠️ Warning: You must include the :8096 at the end of the address. This tells the app exactly which port Jellyfin is listening on. If you forget it, the app will not connect.

Next Steps

  • Setting up 4K streaming on Jellyfin
  • Inviting family to your Jellyfin server
